Black History Month - Luxury Brands To Watch Out For

 

A whole month dedicated to appreciate Blackness, Black History and Black Culture, whether that is in music, arts or fashion there are many attributes to this special month to be thankful for but also appreciate. Below we have set our some fun facts in regards to black culture in the fashion industry, that you may not know or know already along with brands that are essential to have within your wardrobe.

 

A Moment in History

eLIZABETH KECKLEY

Elizabeth Kekcley was an American seamstress and was best known as the personal dressmaker for Mary Todd Lincoln. She established a dressmaking business that grew to include a staff of 20 seamstresses. Her clients were the wives of elite politicians, including Varina Davis, the wife of Jefferson Davis, and Mary Anna Custis Lee, the wife of Robert E. Lee.

RUBY BAILEY

Bermuda-born Ruby Bailey was an actress, a painter and fashion designer. Originally living in Harlem, Bailey started her fashion career through bead making in the costume design world. She then later went on to model all her designs wherever she went and one of the designs that was popularized was a black dress with diamond encrusted spiderwebs.

ANN LOWE

Ann Lowe was the first African American to be noted as a fashion designer. She was best known for her taffeta designs and also designed the famous blue silk taffeta dress worn by Jackie Kennedy,at the time of marrying John.F.Kennedy. Lowe had several stores around New York City which included Ann Lowe’s Gowns which was a huge success for the elitist.

DAPPER DAN

Daniel Day also famously known as Dapper Dan is a fashion designer who grew up in Harlem. He is notorious for introducing the fashion world to the Hip Hop industry and had a collaboration with famous house Gucci. Dan was also known for reinventing/restructuring some of the iconic monogram logos that we know today which include Gucci, LV and Fendi.

 

Must Have Designers

CHRISTOPHER JOHN ROGERS

Christopher John Rogers first launched his brand (named after himself) in 2016. Many celebrities have graced his designs and continues to take his designs to new heights every season.

LAQUAN SMITH

LaQuan Smith first debuted his collection in 2010 at NYFW which was named. Ever since, LaQuan has been a force to be seen every season at NYFW, with his designs being well favoured amongst celebs.

TELFAR

Telfar was launched by Telfar Clemens in 2013. Telfar who has Liberian origins, has worked for and with major establishments and celebrities, making a name for himself within the fashion industry,

VICTOR GLEMAUD

Victor — family origin from Hait, first debuted his collection in 2006. Victor is synonymous for his eccentric designs and use of knitwear for all genders, all race, all sizes and personalities.

ANDREA IYaMAH

The brand Andrea Iyamah was created by Dumebi Iyamah who’s origins are from Lagos, Nigeria. Dumebi launched her clothing brand in 2011 and specialises in swimwear, custom bridal wear and ready to wear.

FE NOEL

Fe Noel is a Granada born fashion designers, who’s label was created in 2018/2019. Fe Noel specialises in everything beachwear inspired, but all her designs derive/inspired from both her mother and grandmother.
