Highlights: New York Fashion Week F/W 2024
Written by Amiya B
Fashion Week 2024 hit the ground running in New York, with labels putting on their best shows for the Fall/Winter season from the 9th to the 14th of February. Historically, NYC is known for its fashion, with a varied range of styles on display across the streets of The Big Apple. This year’s NYFW style can be described as sometimes monochromatic, slightly classical and expectedly dramatic. The city witnessed shows by some of the biggest labels in the industry from Carolina Herrera to Thom Browne and we’ve highlighted our favourite NYFW looks fresh off the runway.
1. Proenza Schouler
We simply had to begin with Proenza Schouler’s gorgeous collection for the Fall/Winter season. Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez truly delivered on the runway, from the effortlessly slinky dresses to the fabulous oversized fur jackets. Our favourite look has to be the chic two-piece blue/grey fringed set.
2. Carolina Herrera
In what can confidently be described as an ode to the ‘80s and ‘90s, Wes Gordon celebrated powerful women through Carolina Herrera’s Fall/Winter runway. This apparel gave us gorgeous bright pops of colour and all the elements of classic couture. Not to mention the slicked-back dos, the vintage gold earrings and the bold red lips - so perfectly Carolina Herrera.
3. Khaite
Catherine Holstein’s collection for Khaite focused on the concept of the silhouette. Inspired by the idea of “heritage from memory”, particularly pulling styles from her memories of her mother, Holstein’s experimentation with classic silhouettes combined with predominantly dark hues of mixed textures resulted in a sentimentally chic collection.
4. Jason Wu
Jason Wu’s F/W collection was dedicated to the dreamers and the supremely talented members of his team. The collection itself elevated the deconstructed aesthetic with raw fabric and unfastened draping in a surprisingly stylistic manner. Deconstructed clothing is often a hit or a miss and Wu’s recent work is most definitely the former.
5. Helmut Lang
Peter Do’s theme for this Helmut Lang curation was based on the concepts of protection and projection. A mixed bag of textures and styles, the line itself is New York personified. With this collection, Do successfully attempted to push the label’s boundaries while signalling a new era of fashion under his guidance.
6. Altuzarra
Modiste-ly moody and yet momentously ethereal, there is no question as to why Joseph Altuzarra’s NYFW show is one of our favourites. Playing on the idea that “the everyday and utilitarian coexist with the precious and the rare”, Altuzarra flawlessly delivered a show depicting the balance in dressing to wear and dressing to dress up.
7. Fforme
It’s hard to believe that this line is from Fforme’s second-ever runway show. Paul Helbers’ collection is fashioned like that of a long-reigning label and it’s clear that the somewhat nascent brand has pulled together a show worthy of applause. The metaphorical thread running through the show takes shape in the form of a figure-fitting knit beanie, only changing in colour to reflect the core of each look.
8. Ulla Johnson
Ulla Johnson’s F/W collection came through with the colour, the craftsmanship and the dramatic set. According to the brand, this line is meant to “celebrate the transformative power of reinterpreting tradition, and revealing what lies just beneath the surface”. From the made-to-fit shiny pinstripe suit to the ruffled brown maxi dress, the label served high fashion like no other.
9. Thom Browne
Despite being one of the final shows to take the runway at NYFW, Thom Browne did not disappoint. Usually exhausted by the end of Fashion Week, audiences took to this collection with the same amount of excitement as any of the early shows this season - and the reason is clear. The line itself is pure dark dramatism at its finest.
