Update Your Wardrobe, Without Buying Anything New

Many of us know that we need a style change or update but are not in a financial place to purchase an entirely new wardrobe. Let’s face it clothes are expensive and even purchasing a few new items is a reach for some of us. Thankfully, there are a few ways you can spice up your wardrobe with what you already have.

Take Stock

Organising a closet can be a large task and one that many of us don’t even know how to start. However, to make new looks you need to know what’s actually in your wardrobe. If your wardrobe does need a deeper clean, have a look at our Wardrobe Detox article.

  1. Make a pile of items that need repairing or altering and get that down on your to-do list.

  2. Make two piles: Items you love and items you don't love

Try new combinations

This is your time to have your own mini fashion show! Throw everything you have been taught about fashion and try as many combinations as possible.

  1. Try new colour combinations - read Create the Perfect Outfit with the Colour Wheel.

  2. Try new print/ texture combinations - combine those florals with stripes, or your favourite fluffy sweater with a satin slip dress.

  3. Pair accessories that you would usually never wear together, and even mix seasons if you want to.

Find Clothing Swap Events or Swap with your friends

Clothing swaps are events where you can trade your unwanted clothes for someone else’s unwanted clothes. After all, one person's trash is another person's pleasure! If you live in London, or any big city, chances are that there are hundreds of clothing swap events being hosted.

Or if swapping with strangers isn’t your thing, you can also swap with your friends or even host your own clothing swap event. If planning to do this there are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Choose the right location that allows the clothing to be the centre of attention

  2. Invite people with compatible taste

  3. Invite people that take care of their clothes

  4. Set a range for the number of items to bring (eg. 2-3)

DIY It

If you are feeling extra crafty, don’t be afraid to DIY your unwanted pieces. There are countless videos on youtube that teach you how to embellish, tailor, dye or even create an entirely new piece out of your old clothes.
