What to Fold and What to Hang
We will discussing the best techniques and practices of what to fold and what to hang when it comes to your wardrobe. If you haven’t already, make sure to check out our Folding Tips 101 which is a short video on simple folding techniques and the article “Intro: Managing Your Wardrobe.”
What are the items that should always be folded?
Items that should always be folded are denim however, if you have a denim pull out hanger that is usually located at the bottom of the wardrobe or wherever it is placed in your wardrobe, they can be hung there; non delicate knitwear, hoodies, t-shirts and non delicate tops. You will find when following this step you will add more space to your closet which is great as you can use that space for other items - but also most of those items are your everyday clothes which do not necessarily need to be hung unless mentioned in q’s 2.
What are the items that should always be hung?
Items that should always be hung are shirts, trousers, delicate knitwear such as cashmere, Lana wool and etc. dresses, mens two/three piece suits, jackets, and blazers. It is vital that you keep all your nice and delicate items together so that they do not get ruined. Them getting ruined could be by colour transfer and friction between materials which are the most occurrence when hanging clothing with non delicate items. Advisably, if you do have very precious and delicate items of clothing make sure to have a clothing dust bag to keep them in - in this way you will keep them in pristine condition.
What are the best technique for folding and hanging?
We advice to always try your best by folding all category items in the same way, for example if you fold your denim jeans in a two way formation stick to that, rather than folding half in one way and folding the other half in another way. This will indeed make your wardrobe look tidy and neat (for folding tips you can find this on our YouTube video Folding Tips 101). As for hanging always use velvet hangers and start with the smaller thinner hangers before moving onto your thicker hangers. In this way you will have more space in your wardrobe, and only use thicker hangers on clothing such as heavy knitwear, blazers and coats/jackets so they do not lose their shape.
Is there a pattern of folding and hanging I should follow?
Not necessarily, however you can start with your knitwear/hoodies first then your tops/t-shirts and last your denim/chinos. As above mentioned most of these items you will find are more of your everyday that are stored away in the folded section. When it comes to hanging you start with tops/blouses (shirts for men), dresses (trousers for men) trousers (knitwear for men) knitwear, blazers, and lastly jackets and coats - if you want to take the extra step then you can also colour coordinate your wardrobe.
I do not have a lot of wardrobe space so how do I apply these steps to MY wardrobe?
If you do not have a lot of wardrobe space, we advice that you get storage boxes to put in your wardrobe - dressing tables are also a great way to expand and utilise your space if you have one. You could for example put all your “everyday” clothes in there and keep your wardrobe hanging space for the items that need to be hung. You could also put storage boxes at the top as well as at the bottom of your wardrobe to expand that space.
